Masonry workers
The job: Masonry workers (also
sometimes referred to as brick-
layers or simply as masons)
build structures or structural
components from bricks, stones,
concrete, and more. Homes with
brick walls or facades are thanks
to the work of masonry workers, as
are brick or stone fences, chim-
neys, and more. In addition to new
construction work, masons may
also be entrusted with restoration
and maintenance of existing
masonry, including that found on
historic structures.
The pay: The median annual wage
for masonry workers in the U.S. is
$53,010 per year.
The prospects: Given that
masonry is becoming increasingly
less common in many types of
construction, the BLS projects that
the masonry trade will also see a
slight decline between 2022 and
2032. That projected decline is
three percent, equivalent to the
loss of about 8,900 jobs.
